Why Are There Feathers Under My Solar Panels?

Finding feathers around or underneath your solar panels can be a sign that pigeons are regularly using the area for shelter, roosting, or nesting.

Solar Panels Create a Protected Space

The gap underneath solar panels gives pigeons shade and protection from weather and predators.

Once birds begin spending significant time there, feathers can gradually collect underneath the array and around the roof.

Look for Other Signs of Pigeons

Feathers alone do not necessarily mean pigeons are nesting, but look for:

  • Droppings around the roof

  • Pigeons entering underneath the panels

  • Nesting material

  • Morning or evening pigeon noises

  • Debris falling from the roof

Repeated activity is a stronger sign of an established problem.

Debris Can Build Up Under the Panels

If pigeons have been living underneath the array for a long time, feathers may be mixed with nests, droppings, and other debris.

Cleaning Does Not Prevent Them From Returning

Removing feathers and nests cleans up the existing mess, but pigeons can return if the space underneath the panels remains accessible.

Solar panel pigeon proofing addresses the access point by physically blocking pigeons from getting underneath.

Bird Mesh Blocks the Nesting Area

Solar panel bird mesh can be fitted around the accessible perimeter of the array after existing nests and debris are removed.

If feathers keep appearing around the same solar array, watch where pigeons are going.

Repeatedly seeing them disappear underneath the panels is a strong sign that they are using that protected space regularly.
