Why Are Pigeons So Common in Mesa, Arizona?

Pigeons are common throughout Mesa because residential neighborhoods provide many of the things they look for: elevated resting areas, protection from weather, reliable food and water sources, and sheltered spaces where they can build nests.

Solar panels can make a home especially attractive because the gap between the panels and roof creates a protected area that is difficult for predators to access.

Why Do Pigeons Like Solar Panels in Mesa?

Solar panels create shade and shelter from Arizona weather while providing a protected space underneath the array.

Once pigeons begin using an array regularly, homeowners may notice:

• Droppings accumulating on the roof

• Nesting material underneath panels

• Pigeons walking along panel edges

• Birds returning every morning or evening

• Feathers and debris underneath the array

• Droppings on patios, driveways, or walkways below

Cleaning the area alone does not prevent pigeons from returning if they can still get underneath the panels.

For established activity, professional pigeon control in Mesa, Arizona usually focuses on physically blocking access to the protected nesting area.

Can Pigeons Make Solar Panels Dirtier?

Yes. Pigeon activity can add droppings, feathers, nesting material, and other debris around a solar array.

Arizona dust already accumulates on panels, and bird activity can make the problem worse.

How Do You Keep Pigeons From Getting Under Solar Panels?

The method we normally recommend is installing solar panel bird mesh around the accessible perimeter of the array.

The mesh creates a physical barrier while allowing the solar panels to remain exposed to airflow.

For pigeon-proofing installations, we prefer black PVC-coated galvanized steel mesh and metal solar-panel clips rather than relying on cheap plastic deterrents.

Other parts of the roof may require different methods. Bird spikes or tensioned bird wire can sometimes be useful on exposed landing areas, while eaves and other openings may require their own exclusion solution.
