The mesh around your solar panels may look like a simple piece of wire, but the material matters.
Two pigeon proofing jobs can look almost identical from the driveway while using very different materials. Some companies use basic metal hardware cloth around solar panels. At Cheetah, we recommend black PVC coated galvanized steel mesh instead.
The reason is simple. Solar panel pigeon proofing is supposed to stay on an Arizona roof for years. We want a material designed to hold up to long term outdoor exposure rather than using basic exposed wire and hoping it lasts.

What Is Regular Hardware Cloth?
Hardware cloth is a wire mesh commonly sold for fencing, cages, garden projects, pest exclusion, and other general uses.
There are many different versions of it.
Some are galvanized. Some have coatings. Some are made from different metals and wire thicknesses.
When we talk about regular hardware cloth in pigeon proofing, we are talking about the basic exposed metal mesh that some companies install around the perimeter of solar panels without an additional PVC coating.
It can physically block pigeons from getting underneath the panels.
Our concern is what happens to that material after years of sitting outside on a roof.
What Is PVC Coated Galvanized Steel Mesh?
The mesh we prefer starts with galvanized steel wire.
Galvanizing adds a protective zinc layer to the steel to help protect it from corrosion.
The mesh is then covered with a black PVC coating.
That gives the wire another protective layer between the metal and the outdoor environment.
So instead of relying on exposed metal alone, the system has:
Steel for strength
Galvanizing for corrosion resistance
PVC coating over the outside
For a product that is going to stay exposed on a roof, we think that combination makes more sense.
Problem With Exposed Metal Mesh: Rust and Corrosion
This is our biggest concern with using basic exposed hardware cloth for permanent solar panel pigeon proofing.
Metal that remains outdoors can eventually corrode.
The Arizona climate is dry, but that does not mean roof mounted materials never get wet.
Solar arrays are still exposed to:
Rain
Monsoon storms
Morning moisture
Bird droppings
Years of outdoor exposure
Once corrosion begins, the appearance and strength of the mesh can deteriorate.
The pigeon proofing system might still work for some time, but we would rather reduce that risk from the beginning.
Why We Prefer the PVC Coating
The black PVC coating adds another layer protecting the galvanized steel underneath.
That does not mean PVC coated mesh is indestructible or that it can never deteriorate.
Nothing installed outdoors lasts forever.
Our position is simply that if we have a choice between exposed hardware cloth and PVC coated galvanized steel mesh, we would rather install the material with the additional protection.
Appearance Matters Too
Pigeon proofing is installed around the outside edge of your solar array, so part of it may be visible from the ground.
Basic silver hardware cloth can stand out against black solar panels.
Black PVC coated mesh tends to blend in better with the dark frames of most solar panels.
The goal is not to make the pigeon proofing invisible.
The goal is to keep it from becoming the first thing you notice when looking at the roof.
A pigeon proofing system can work well and still look poorly installed. We think both function and appearance matter.
Does PVC Coating Make the Mesh Stronger?
The steel wire itself provides most of the structural strength.
The reason we care about the PVC coating is primarily the additional protection around that wire.
We do not recommend choosing mesh based only on whether it feels stiff in someone's hand during an estimate.
We care about the entire material:
What metal is underneath?
Is it galvanized?
Is it coated?
How thick is the wire?
How is it attached?
How will it hold up after years on the roof?
The best material still needs to be installed properly.
Good Mesh Can Still Fail if the Installation Is Poor
Using PVC coated galvanized steel mesh does not automatically mean you are getting a good pigeon proofing job.
The installation matters just as much.
A company can use good material and still leave an opening around:
Corners
Changes in panel height
Separate arrays
Uneven rooflines
Difficult sections of the solar array
The mesh also needs enough properly installed fasteners to keep it secured against the perimeter.
This is why we recommend looking at the material and the installation method together.
Ask What Mesh the Company Is Actually Installing
Do not assume every pigeon proofing company uses the same material.
Before hiring someone, ask:
What type of mesh will you install around my solar panels?
Then get more specific:
Is it galvanized steel?
Does it have a PVC coating?
What color is it?
Can you show me the actual material?
Can you show me close up photos of previous installations?
Those questions take less than a minute to ask and can tell you much more than simply comparing two total prices.
Is Regular Hardware Cloth Always Bad?
No.
We would not say that every installation using exposed hardware cloth is automatically going to fail.
There are different grades of metal mesh, different galvanizing processes, different wire thicknesses, and different installation methods.
A well installed metal mesh can still physically prevent pigeons from getting underneath solar panels.
Our recommendation is based on what we would rather install on a customer's roof for long term pigeon proofing.
When we can use galvanized steel and add a PVC coating over it, we do not see much reason to choose a more basic exposed mesh instead.
What if Another Company Says Their Regular Mesh Is Galvanized?
Ask them exactly what product they use.
Galvanized steel is already much different from completely unprotected steel.
The real comparison may be:
Galvanized steel mesh
versus
PVC coated galvanized steel mesh
If both products are galvanized, then the PVC coated option still has the additional outer coating.
We prefer that additional protection.
This is also why homeowners should not rely on vague phrases such as "metal mesh" when comparing companies.
Two companies can both truthfully say they install metal bird mesh while using very different products.
Mesh Material Is Only One Part of a Good Pigeon Proofing Job
Before hiring someone, we recommend asking about several parts of the installation.
What type of mesh are you using?
We prefer black PVC coated galvanized steel mesh.
What type of clips are you using?
We recommend metal clips rather than plastic clips for long term durability.
Are you cleaning underneath the panels first?
The mesh should not simply be installed around nests and debris that should have been removed beforehand.
How do you handle difficult corners?
The entire accessible perimeter needs to be addressed.
What happens to debris coming off the roof?
Ask whether tarps are laid out to catch bird droppings and nesting material or whether the mess will end up in the rocks and landscaping.
What happens if a roof tile is broken?
Get that answer before the work starts.
These details tell you much more about a pigeon proofing job than simply asking how much it costs.

For solar panel pigeon proofing, Cheetah recommends black PVC coated galvanized steel mesh rather than basic exposed hardware cloth.
We prefer it because it combines the strength of steel, the corrosion resistance of galvanizing, and an additional PVC coating while also blending better with most solar panel systems.
It is not the only thing that determines whether pigeon proofing will work.
The cleanup, fasteners, corners, installation method, and condition of the finished perimeter all matter too.
