Not all solar panel bird mesh is installed the same way.
One common method uses precut sections of mesh, often around 5 feet long. Another method uses a continuous roll of mesh that is cut and fitted on the roof around the solar array.
Both methods can physically block pigeons from getting underneath solar panels when installed correctly.
At Cheetah, we prefer continuous roll mesh because it gives us fewer seams and fewer individual sections that can become an access point if something comes loose.
What Is Precut S Tile Bird Mesh?
Precut bird mesh comes in shorter sections that are already shaped or sized for installation around solar panels on tile roofs.
Instead of cutting one long piece of mesh around the array, the installer works with multiple individual sections.
For example, if the sections are approximately 5 feet long, a large solar array may require many separate pieces.
Each piece has its own fasteners and connects next to another piece of mesh.
This can make installation faster and more standardized.
That convenience is one of the main reasons contractors may choose precut systems.
What Is Continuous Roll Bird Mesh?
Continuous roll mesh comes as a longer roll rather than individual short sections.
We cut and shape the mesh on the roof to fit the actual solar array.
For the way we install it at Cheetah, the goal is to use one continuous section around the perimeter of the solar panels whenever the layout allows it.
Instead of having connections every few feet, there is generally one place where the beginning and end of the mesh meet.
That difference is the main reason we prefer it.
Problem With Precut Mesh: Every Section Creates Another Potential Failure Point
Imagine an array that requires ten separate 5 foot pieces of mesh.
Each one has to:
Stay properly positioned
Remain securely fastened
Line up with the next section
Maintain coverage along its entire length
If one section is not installed properly or enough fasteners holding that particular section fail, that piece can create an opening.
The rest of the installation may still look completely fine.
The pigeon only needs one usable opening.
With multiple individual sections around the array, there are more places where one section can potentially separate from another or pull away.
Why One Continuous Section Gives Us More Redundancy
With continuous mesh, the fasteners work together along a much longer piece of material.
If one individual fastener fails, the fasteners immediately beside it are still holding the same continuous piece of mesh.
For a large enough opening to develop, multiple nearby attachment points would generally need to fail or the mesh itself would need to become displaced.
That is the type of redundancy we want in a pigeon proofing system.
We do not want one isolated attachment issue to immediately turn one entire short section into an easy entry point.
There Are Fewer Seams to Watch
Every time one piece of mesh ends and another begins, you have another transition.
With precut pieces, those transitions may occur repeatedly around the solar array.
With our continuous roll installation, there is generally only one place where the two ends of the mesh eventually meet.
We prefer having fewer connections because every connection is something that has to remain properly aligned over time.
A simpler perimeter with fewer seams gives us fewer places to worry about.
It Can Be Harder to Spot a Problem With Precut Sections
Another concern is visibility.
If one small precut section comes loose somewhere along the side or back of the solar array, the homeowner may not notice it from the ground.
The rest of the mesh can still appear perfectly normal.
Meanwhile, pigeons may have discovered the opening.
With the continuous installation method we use, the beginning and end of the mesh meet in a location where a problem is easier to notice.
If something significant happens at that main connection point, the mesh is more likely to visibly hang or pull away rather than having one isolated section quietly fail somewhere around the array.
No installation method makes every problem immediately visible from the ground, but we prefer reducing the number of hidden seams as much as possible.
Does This Mean Precut Bird Mesh Does Not Work?
No.
A properly installed precut mesh system can block pigeons.
We would not say that every solar array using short mesh sections is going to fail.
The quality of the installation still matters enormously.
A good installer using precut mesh can certainly produce a functioning pigeon barrier.
Our position is simply that if we have the choice between many individual sections and one continuous section, we prefer fewer pieces and fewer seams.
Why Do Some Companies Use Precut Mesh?
There are legitimate reasons an installer might like a precut system.
The pieces are already prepared for a particular type of installation.
That can make them:
Faster to handle
Easier to transport
More consistent in size
Easier for technicians to install the same way repeatedly
That does not make the product bad.
It just means the installer is accepting a system with more individual pieces.
For Cheetah, we would rather spend the additional effort cutting and fitting the continuous material on the roof.
Continuous Mesh Still Needs Enough Fasteners
Using one long piece of mesh does not magically make the installation good.
Fastener placement still matters.
If someone installs continuous mesh but barely secures it, pigeons may still find a way underneath.
We want attachment points positioned close enough together that the mesh remains firmly against the perimeter of the solar array.
This is also why we prefer metal clips instead of plastic clips.
The mesh and fasteners need to work together as one system.
Continuous Mesh Also Has to Be Fitted Around Corners Correctly
The benefit of having one continuous piece disappears if the installer leaves openings around difficult areas.
Solar arrays can have:
Corners
Changes in elevation
Different panel layouts
Uneven tile surfaces
Separate groups of panels
Tight areas between roof sections
The mesh needs to be cut and shaped around those areas.
That requires more work than simply attaching straight sections.
The goal is not just having one long piece.
The goal is having one continuous barrier that actually follows the perimeter correctly.
What Happens if One Fastener Breaks?
This is where the difference between the two systems becomes easiest to understand.
With a short precut section
If a fastener fails in the wrong place, there may be fewer nearby attachment points holding that individual piece tightly in position.
If the section pulls away enough, pigeons may have an opening.
With continuous roll mesh
That same point is part of a much larger piece of mesh.
Multiple fasteners directly beside it are still holding that continuous piece.
One failed fastener does not necessarily mean the mesh in that area can move enough to create an entry point.
That does not make continuous mesh impossible to damage.
It simply gives us the type of redundancy we prefer.
What Should You Ask a Pigeon Proofing Company?
If you are comparing quotes, ask the company how its mesh is installed.
Good questions include:
Is the mesh installed in short precut sections or from a continuous roll?
This immediately tells you which type of system you are getting.
How long are the individual sections?
If the company uses precut pieces, ask how frequently one section ends and another begins.
What happens where two sections meet?
Those connection points should still prevent pigeons from finding an opening.
How closely are the fasteners spaced?
The mesh needs enough attachment points to stay secured.
Are the clips metal or plastic?

Can you show me close up photos?
Do not only look at a finished installation from the driveway.
Ask to see corners, connection points, difficult roof sections, and the actual fasteners.
What Type of Mesh Does Cheetah Use?
We use black PVC coated galvanized steel mesh.
We prefer the PVC coated galvanized steel material over basic exposed hardware mesh, and we prefer installing it from a continuous roll rather than relying on many individual precut sections.
That means our preferred solar panel pigeon proofing system combines:
PVC coated galvanized steel mesh
Continuous roll installation
Metal clips
Multiple closely spaced attachment points
As few mesh connection points as practical
Each part addresses a different potential weakness in the installation.
Precut Mesh vs Continuous Roll Mesh: Our Recommendation
Both installation methods can keep pigeons from getting underneath solar panels.
We prefer continuous roll mesh.
The biggest reason is not appearance.
It is redundancy.
With multiple 5 foot sections, every individual piece creates another section that has to remain properly attached and another transition that needs to stay closed.
With a continuous roll, the fasteners around the array are securing one continuous barrier. If one fastener fails, multiple nearby fasteners continue holding the same piece of mesh.
There is also generally only one location where the beginning and end of our mesh meet rather than having seams throughout the perimeter.
For something we expect to remain on an Arizona roof for years, we prefer fewer pieces, fewer seams, and more redundancy.
