Pigeon Removal vs Pigeon Proofing: What Is the Difference?

2 min read

Pigeon removal and pigeon proofing are not the same service.

Pigeon removal deals with the birds, nests, or mess that are already there. Pigeon proofing focuses on stopping pigeons from getting back into the area.

For pigeons living underneath solar panels, homeowners often need both.

What Is Pigeon Removal?

The term pigeon removal can mean different things depending on the company.

It may include:

  • Removing accessible nests

  • Removing nesting material

  • Cleaning pigeon droppings and debris

  • Addressing pigeons currently using the area

If pigeons have been nesting underneath your solar panels, simply removing the nests does not close the opening they used to get there.

They may still be able to return underneath the array.

What Is Pigeon Proofing?

Pigeon proofing means modifying the property so pigeons can no longer access a specific nesting or roosting area.

For solar panels, this normally means installing bird mesh around the exposed perimeter of the array.

Cheetah uses black PVC coated galvanized steel mesh with a non invasive attachment system that does not require drilling into the solar panel frames.

Which One Do You Need?

If pigeons are already nesting underneath your solar panels, removing the existing mess without blocking access usually leaves the original problem unresolved.

The typical order is:

  1. Inspect underneath the solar panels

  2. Remove accessible nests and nesting material

  3. Clean the affected areas included in the project

  4. Install bird mesh around the exposed perimeter

The exact scope can vary depending on how much buildup is present and where the pigeons are nesting.

What If You Only Remove the Pigeons?

The space underneath the panels is still available.

Solar arrays give pigeons a protected, difficult to reach area with less disturbance and structures that can hold nesting material.

If the perimeter remains open, another pigeon can potentially use the same space.

This is why Cheetah generally prefers physical exclusion for established under panel nesting problems.

What If You Only Install Mesh?

That can also be a problem if pigeons have already been living underneath the panels.

Existing nests and debris should be addressed before the area is enclosed.

A pigeon proofing quote should clearly explain whether cleanup and nest removal are included rather than assuming every contractor provides the same service.

The Bottom Line

Pigeon removal addresses what is already there. Pigeon proofing helps stop pigeons from getting back into the protected area.

For an established pigeon problem underneath solar panels, the most complete solution usually involves cleaning out the existing nesting area and then physically blocking access.
