Is Pure Water Better Than Soap for Cleaning Solar Panels?
For routine solar panel cleaning, purified or deionized water is usually a better first choice than soap.
It removes dirt without leaving behind many of the minerals found in normal tap water, and it avoids unnecessary detergent residue. Some solar manufacturers recommend deionized water as the preferred cleaning method and suggest detergents only when water alone cannot remove the contamination.
Why Use Purified Water?
Regular tap water contains dissolved minerals.
When tap water dries on a solar panel, those minerals can remain on the glass as water spots or residue.
Purified or deionized water removes most of those dissolved minerals before the water reaches the panels.
REC specifically recommends deionized water as its preferred cleaning water, while LONGi warns that repeated use of water with high mineral content can leave deposits on the glass.
Does Soap Clean Solar Panels Better?
Not necessarily.
For normal dust and dirt, adding soap may provide little benefit.
LONGi recommends using detergents only when the panel cannot be cleaned effectively with water alone. REC also allows a mild biodegradable detergent when additional cleaning is needed.
The important point is that stronger cleaning chemicals are not automatically better.
Harsh acidic, alkaline, abrasive, or corrosive cleaners can be inappropriate for solar panels.

What About Pressure Washing?
More pressure does not mean a cleaner panel.
REC specifically warns against high pressure cleaners because they can damage panels, laminate, or cells.
A soft brush and properly treated water are usually a much more controlled approach.
