Can Pigeons Get Through Solar Panel Bird Mesh?

2 min read

Properly installed solar panel bird mesh is designed to physically block pigeons from getting underneath the panels.

If pigeons are getting through after installation, the problem is usually not that they squeezed through the mesh itself. More often, there is an opening somewhere around the perimeter.

How Do Pigeons Get Past Bird Mesh?

Common weak points include:

  • Gaps at corners

  • Mesh that does not follow the roof closely

  • Loose or missing clips

  • Sections that have pulled away

  • Openings between separate pieces of mesh

  • Areas removed during later solar or roof work

Even a good material will not work correctly if an opening is left large enough for a pigeon to enter.

Does the Type of Mesh Matter?

Yes.

Cheetah uses black PVC coated galvanized steel mesh for solar panel pigeon proofing.

The mesh needs to be strong enough for long term rooftop exposure while still being shaped closely around the solar array and roof.

We generally prefer continuous roll mesh that is cut and fitted on the roof rather than surrounding the system with many short independent sections.

The fewer unnecessary breaks in the barrier, the fewer places there are for a section to separate.

Do the Clips Matter Too?

Absolutely.

The mesh is only useful if it stays attached.

Cheetah generally prefers metal solar panel clips because of concerns about plastic clips becoming brittle after long periods of exposure to Arizona rooftop conditions.

That does not mean every plastic clip fails. Installation quality and the specific clip system still matter.

Can Pigeons Push Loose Mesh Open?

Potentially.

Pigeons regularly returning to the same nesting area may investigate weak points around the installation.

A section that is already loose or poorly secured can become an entry point.

That is why the installer should pay particular attention to corners, roof transitions, and areas where the gap underneath the panels changes.

What If Pigeons Get Under the Panels After Installation?

Look for the actual opening rather than assuming the entire system needs replacement.

Often the problem is localized to one section.

Possible causes include:

  • A failed attachment point

  • Mesh disturbed by another contractor

  • A missed opening

  • A section that was not fitted correctly

  • Changes to the solar array after installation

If the rest of the system is still secure, the affected area may be repairable.

Should Nests Be Removed Before Installing the Mesh?

Yes.

If pigeons are already nesting underneath the panels, accessible nests and nesting material should be addressed before the perimeter is closed.

Cheetah offers bird nest removal from underneath solar panels as part of applicable pigeon control projects.

The Bottom Line

Pigeons should not be able to simply pass through properly installed solar panel bird mesh.

When pigeons get underneath a protected array, the more likely issue is an opening, loose section, failed attachment point, or area that was never fully closed.

Good pigeon proofing depends on both the material and how carefully the entire perimeter is installed.
